Power Shift is Australia’s first national youth climate summit. It’s the moment where our fast-growing youth movement for a safe climate future comes together.
Power Shift 2009 will leverage the momentum AYCC member groups – all of Australia’s biggest youth organisations – have built through their various programs and campaigns. We’re taking our movement beyond our schools, campuses and youth organisations to Sydney to demand – and create – a power shift to renewable energy, green jobs and safe climate future.
If there is any time when our generation must come together and make our voices heard on climate change, it is 2009. Our window of opportunity is short – in December 2009 the United Nations Climate Negotiations in Copenhagen will be a key turning point where Governments must agree to stronger global cuts in emissions. But Governments will only aim as high as their people demand; hence young people are organising Power Shift summits in the US, UK and Australia.
Power Shift 2009 will be an historic event for Australian youth to share best practices, build community, learn skills and solutions, set clear and ambitious plans for action, and pressure our political leaders for stronger climate solutions.
Power Shift will be a culminating point of our Switched On Schools program as well as our other campaigns and activities. It will be a significant event for our 25 member and partner youth organisations. Power Shift 2009 will bring the youth climate movement together – in the form of thousands of young people from all over Australia. We have 200 local Power Shift recruiters in high schools, TAFEs, Universities and workplaces in every State and Territory.
